Medical Hypnosis FAQ

What is medical hypnosis?

Medical hypnosis has been growing in popularity over the years, and for good reason. This proven technique utilizes the power of the mind-body connection to promote healing and well-being. It involves inducing a relaxed state of awareness in which individuals become more receptive to positive suggestions and imagery.

How does medical hypnosis work?

Medical hypnosis works by helping individuals to relax deeply and focus their attention on positive suggestions and images, in order to harness the power of their mind-body connection to promote healing and wellness. It can help to reduce stress, manage pain, improve sleep, improve outcomes in surgical procedures such as reduced healing time, improve lifestyle habits, and much more, by shifting thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a positive direction.
Also, as more current research has demonstrated, emotions stored in the body, such as those caused by trauma, often play a key role in creating physical symptoms. With this in mind, hypnosis can be a valuable tool for improving health, by helping individuals reprocess traumatic memories, reduce anxiety and distress, and improve overall functioning.

Is medical hypnosis safe?

Yes! While it is important to note that medical is NOT a substitute for traditional medical care, medical hypnosis is generally considered safe, and can be used safely in conjunction with traditional medical treatments. In many of the areas where medical hypnosis shines, such as pain management, there is a safety advantage to working with hypnosis, because of the many negative side effects associated with pain medications.

What are the benefits of medical hypnosis?

Medical hypnosis has been shown to have a wide range of benefits, including: reducing symptoms like pain and nausea, improving healing times and outcomes from surgical interventions, helping change lifestyle habits that contribute to medical issues, and helping with emotional factors that impact health, such as stress and anxiety. Medical hypnosis has the benefit of being both non-invasive and drug-free, making it a useful adjunct to traditional medical treatments, and a valuable tool for individuals managing a range of medical conditions. Some interesting research about the areas where hypnosis can have a positive impact on health outcomes include:
Immune system
Sleep
Pain management
Digestive health
Reduce symptoms from chemo
Accelerated surgical wound healing
Anxiety before medical procedures
Auto-immune disorders

What conditions can be treated with medical hypnosis?

First, to clarify an important point, because many people ask the question in this way, I am not a doctor, so I don't treat any disease or condition. However, in partnership with your medical treatment, hypnosis as an aid in healing the body has enormous benefits in a wide variety of ways, because our mind-body connection impacts nearly every aspect of health. Some areas where medical hypnosis has been shown so far to be particularly effective include: chronic pain, underlying emotions such as stress and anxiety, IBS, insomnia, migraines, managing symptoms from everything from chemotherapy to auto-immune issues, and help coping with impacts from serious and long term medical issues.

How many sessions of medical hypnosis are required?

The number of sessions required varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Some people may experience relief after just one session, while others may benefit from several sessions. I will offer an estimate for your specific situation during our phone consultation, to be sure you know roughly what to expect from the process.

How much does medical hypnosis cost, and is medical hypnosis covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, hypnosis is outside of the categories covered by most insurance, though I have had clients who are able to use their HSA for payment. However, being a short term process, it is reasonably affordable for most people. Obviously the range varies widely depending on your needs, so I can give you an up to date estimate, with no obligation to proceed, based on your specific situation, during our free phone consultation. Please let me know if you are on the Oregon Health Plan, or are within the income requirements for OHP, as I do offer a limited number of discounted sessions based on this criteria.

What should I expect during a medical hypnosis session?

We will start by discussing the issue you came in for, so I have the specific details about your goals and issues to make sure that the hypnotic work is targeted to your unique situation. Then, I will lead you into hypnosis, where I will guide you in communicating with your unconscious mind to make the changes you desire. I will then bring you out of trance so you will be fully alert when you leave. Depending on your issue, we may also use tools from EFT or NLP outside of a formal trance to give you a method to use at home, or I may teach you self hypnosis as part of the process.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Everyone goes in and out of trance states every day, so as long as you want to be hypnotized, you can definitely go into hypnosis. Different people respond differently to specific methods of trance induction, which is why you may have heard claims that some people are more susceptible to hypnosis than others, but as a hypnotist with training in the latest client-centered techniques, I have a variety of flexible approaches that I can adapt to the individual needs of each client.

Can medical hypnosis be used alongside traditional medical treatments?

Absolutely, and in fact it SHOULD always be used this way. It is important to work with your healthcare provider to ensure that all physiological factors are being adequately addressed. In this way, hypnosis is used safely and effectively as part of your overall wellness plan.

Are there any side effects of medical hypnosis?

When performed by a trained professional, medical hypnosis is generally considered safe and does not have any serious side effects. Most of the effects that people report are positive, such as feeling more relaxed and comfortable, though occasionally someone gets a slight headache if we come out of the state too abruptly. This is temporary, however, and easy to avoid.

If I’m not located in your area, can I work with you online?

Yes! Working online is actually very similar to working together in person, and is obviously much more convenient for most people, and is even the preference for many local clients. As long as you have a reasonably good internet connection, a private space with a comfortable chair, and the ability to position your webcam and lighting facing towards you in that chair, we can do many of the same things online that happen in an in person session.
